Použití slovesa “to be”
Sloveso “to be” se v anglickém jazyce používá v následujících významech:

| continue | used with the present participle of other verbs to describe actions that are or were still continuing | I'm still eating. You're always complaining. I'll be coming back on Tuesday. |
| passive | used with the past participle of other verbs to form the passive | A new species of mammal has been discovered in the mountains of Tanzania, scientists report. I'd like to go but I haven't been asked. Residents are encouraged to use the vehicles only when they really have to. |
| allow | used to say that someone should or must do something | You're to sit in the corner and keep quiet. There's no money left - what are we to do? They were not to taste freedom again until 1989 when the Soviet system finally collapsed. |
| future | used to show that something will happen in the future | We are to visit the Czech Republic in the spring. Anna was never to see her brother again. |
| future | used in conditional sentences to say what might happen | If I were to refuse they'd be very annoyed. (Totéž, avšak více formálně:) Were I to refuse they'd be very annoyed. |
| can | used to say what can happen | The exhibition of modern prints is currently to be seen at the City Gallery. |
| exist | to exist or live | Such terrible suffering should never be. |
